Burkhard PETER, PhD, works as a psychological psychotherapist in Munich, Germany.

Having studied with Milton H. Erickson, he was founding president of the Milton Erickson Society of Hypnosis Germany, MEG (1978-1984).

He served as board member of the International Society of Hypnosis (1992-2000), and has organized several national and international hypnosis congresses.

He studied the history of hypnosis in Germany and found that “Gassner´s exorcism – not Mesmer´s magnetism – is the real predecessor of modern hypnosis”.

1997 – 2019 he was a lecturer of clinical hypnosis at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Dept. for Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy. He initiated and led several research projects on, e.g.:

  • Electromyographic investigation of hypnotic arm levitation
  • Hypnotizability and intelligence
  • Hypnotizability, personality style and attachment
  • Therapist variable: Personality styles of psychotherapists
  • The special personality profile of the “homo hypnoticus”

His entire publication list is mostly about hypnosis and hypnotherapy:

He is editor-in-chief of the German journal Hypnose-ZHH (since 1984), and serves as consultant editorial board member of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (since 1993).

He was obtained the Fellowship of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (1997), the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Milton Erickson Foundation (1999), the Pierre Janet Award of the International Society of Hypnosis (2004), the Milton Erickson Award of the MEG (2006), and the Lifetime Honorary Membership of the International Society of Hypnosis (2015).
